Sick Picks #1

February 15, 2019

Sick Picks - new rubric on this blog, where I share some stuff that I find sick or cool. I am familiar with every single pick in this list and I liked all of them. This Sick Picks is inspired by Wes Bos and Scott Tolinski at Syntax.fm podcast.

#1 Syntax.fm

Syntax.fm logo Hosted by Wes Bos & Scott Tolinski

Both of these guys have their own YouTube channels with coding tutorials, Wes Bos channel by Wes Bos and LevelUpTuts by Scott Tolinski. On podcast, they talk about different aspects of web-development or development in general. They give hints on becoming a better developer, talk about productivity, motivation and share some very useful tools. And as the coolest part they have Sick Pick rubric! Good to listen while you are on a road, or doing some automated work.

#2 Scrimba

Scrimba — Brand-new platform for learning to code! You know, there are usually two ways you learn coding nowadays if you are a beginner at something.

  1. Watch screencasts on YouTube
  2. Do interactive courses (like codeacademy, freecodecamp)

Screencasts are not so convinient, because you always have to switch between video and your IDE, while you watch and code. Of course you may split the screen, do some hacking for picture-in-picture mode. But imagine a platform, where you can do both watching tutorial and code at the same time! Well, Scrimba actually gives you that. It is a platform, where you watch a cast from a code editor in a code editor itself, you can pause the cast anytime you want and play with the instructor’s code right at the point you paused the cast. And it is much faster than watching any screencast videos, because it is not a video, it is a code editor being broadcasted and only the voice track. Try it now, it has bunch of free courses for web technologies. Check out this course on CSS Grids from the founder of Scrimba. Also you can place your own content as well.

#3 Fireship

Fireship.io logo Fireship(ex. Angular Firebase) — The best coding channel on YouTube as for 2019! It has the highest quality on YouTube you can see both for tutorials and video production! The author of channel recently has also launched a Fireship.io website, where he has paid content. The most of old tutorials are focused on angular and firebase-powered applications, but the author is expanding the range of topics that he talks about. Check out these three vids from the channel:

This is all for now, but I have lots of more sick picks for you that I will share later. So, stay tuned!😎😎
